Authentication

OfficeVP supports multiple authentication methods

Authentication

OfficeVP supports multiple authentication methods. Authentication validates your email with an ISP to let them know your email is not a forged identity, helping you with deliverability to the inbox. Here a great example of email forgery; I was bombarded a while back with email from what looked like was from PayPal. Telling me, I needed to login and update my banking information. Since I have a PayPal account, I knew it was not PayPal. The email actually looked real, and even had a link to a domain with the word PayPal in the URL, but the dead giveaway was "paypal.1bg66sm.com" - Paypal was in the sub domain, not the actual domain, and after examining the email header HTML authentication code, it turned out to be a forgery.

Proof of Identity

Email was design to speed up communication, but is also extremely easy to forge. Authentication is a way to prove an email is genuine and not forged, but there are different methods of authentication. Different ISP's require different methods of authentication, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Some require a file on your server that can be cross-referenced by an ISP called (SPF, Sender ID). Other types of authentication use (Domain Keys & DKIM) which actually embed code in the email itself. These methods make it harder to forge and are much more difficult to implement. In addition, some ISP's choose to check not just one type, but different types of authentication.

Get involved

Someday authentication will become more standardized and hopefully eliminating scam-spammers all together. Until that day comes, we will stay abreast of Authentication, continuing to work with ISP's to get your email authenticated and delivered. We will do our part, while you continue doing your part, researching and educating yourself on how to avoid using spam words in your email content will increase your deliverability. If you have not already, you should Google "Spam words".
